Project Overview

In stage 7 of HNG intern, we were tasked to design a website for African history dating back centuries. As stated in the design brief, designers were to pick a year from a century as a case study.

During this project, I picked between 100kya and 300kya, a century associated with the Stone Age. My biggest challenge in this task was choosing a year with limited history documentation. Hence, it required me to be involved in a stretch of research.

This experience gave me invaluable insight into how to handle an alien design and how to solve new problems.

The Task

Design a highly artistic and engaging webpage on the History of Africa site for a year in the 10th century.

Your task is to create a timeline of the century and an interactive map of Africa for that year, ensuring it provides clear context and detailed insights into significant events. You need to prototype and animate the design to enhance user engagement.

The site should be a masterpiece of UI design, with a unique and captivating visual style that immerses users in the history of Africa. Also, your use of components, vectors and/or illustrations should match the year/time in African history you are designing for and the overall storyline of that particular event.

The Product

The History of Africa website is designed to enable students, researchers, and history enthusiasts to get documented information that dates back in time. It’s an engaging website showcasing African history in the 10th century between 100kya and 300kya.
It highlights critical events, cultures, and achievements. The ultimate goal of this website is to ensure that users can retrieve data without stress.

Goals

Provide users with an immersive educational experience that deepens their understanding of African history in the 10th century through interactive timelines, maps, and detailed content highlighting significant events, regions, and cultures.
Usually, history is perceived to be boring, but the website keeps users engaged through creative, interactive design elements that make learning about history enjoyable and memorable.

Design Process

Research and Discoveries

During this phase, I researched what actual history websites should look like, the norms, and what should be done differently. I conducted a user journey mapping and competitive analysis to ensure a user-focused design approach.

Conceptualization

Brainstorming and building on the insights derived from my research to explore various design options that best fit the target users. Our research revealed that most people have a limited retention rate, so we kept the design simple and image-based to keep users glued.

Design

Delivering polished, high-fidelity designs that prioritize both aesthetics and functionality.
